E-bike operators and councils implement new parking and fee measures

Municipalities and e-bike operators are implementing new measures to manage the growth of shared micromobility and reduce pavement clutter.

In London, the operator Lime has allocated approximately £886,857 to nine boroughs, including Greenwich, Lambeth, and Hackney. This funding is intended to create or expand 586 parking bays to accommodate the rising number of cycling trips, which now account for one in ten of London's daily cycling trips. The initiative aims to address concerns regarding bikes crowding walkways in a city where parking rules are managed on a borough-by-borough basis.

In Australia, the Sutherland Shire Council is considering a new fee structure for shared e-bike operators. The proposed plan includes an application fee of $10,000 for proposals and an annual operating fee of $10,000 per authorized zone. Additionally, the council is weighing charges of up to $40,000 in the first year and $30,000 annually thereafter, alongside a $158 fee for each e-bike impounded due to illegal parking or dangerous placement.
