E-invoicing implementation impacts business costs and tax fraud prevention

The implementation of mandatory e-invoicing is driving significant changes in corporate processes and tax enforcement. For businesses using SAP, the transition involves more than just software costs; the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) must account for system adjustments, interface updates, and compliance structures. While SAP Document and Reporting Compliance (DRC) is a primary option, companies must carefully evaluate volume-based pricing models to avoid escalating costs as invoice numbers grow.

Beyond administrative requirements, e-invoicing serves as a critical tool for combating VAT fraud, which the European Commission estimated cost EU member states approximately 128 billion euros in 2023. By providing structured, uniform, and timely data, e-invoicing allows tax authorities to monitor financial flows in near real-time. This increased visibility makes it harder for criminals to execute complex schemes, such as carousel fraud, which rely on fragmented and slow data exchange between different countries.
