E. Leclerc hypermarket opens on non‑trading Sundays in Radom
The E. Leclerc hypermarket at Toruńska 1 in Radom began operating every Sunday, including those prohibited by Poland’s Sunday trading ban, starting 14 June 2026. The store created a "Reader Club" and a book‑lending point, invoking the legal exemption for reading‑room activities. The chain says the decision was made autonomously by the local manager and complies with current law. Union Solidarity argues that some retailers exploit loopholes to skirt the ban, noting penalties for illegal Sunday trade range from 1,000 to 100,000 złoty.
Poland’s 2026 calendar allows only one official trading Sunday in June – 28 June – when supermarkets, discounters and malls may operate normally. Other scheduled trading Sundays fall on 30 August and three dates in December (6, 13, 20). A parliamentary petition seeks to cut the annual number of trading Sundays from eight to four and to limit Saturday opening hours, but experts warn the proposal could reduce shopping flexibility during key holiday periods.
