Polish Sunday trading ban and retail schedule
Overview
Poland’s law limits regular retail activity to eight designated Sundays per year. In mid‑June 2026, the French hypermarket chain E. Leclerc opened its Radom store every Sunday, citing a “reading‑room” cultural exemption. This tactic, involving the creation of a “Reader Club” or library corner, has been condemned by labour unions like Solidarity as a circumvention of the ban's intent. Other retailers, including Intermarche in Poznań, have reportedly adopted similar “Reader Club” models to maintain seven-day service. Public opinion remains split; a SW Research poll shows 43.9% of Poles favour scrapping the ban and 41.3% oppose it. Parliamentary petitions seek to reduce permitted Sundays from eight to four. The official 2026 schedule of allowed trading dates includes 25 January, 29 March, 26 April, 28 June, 30 August, 6, 13, and 20 December. Exemptions exist for fuel stations, pharmacies, bakeries, small owner-run shops, and venues in transport hubs or tourist areas. In mid-August 2026, retail closures extended into a two-day weekend. Because the public holiday on Saturday, 15 August (Polish Armed Forces Day and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) falls immediately before a statutory non-trading Sunday on 16 August, most supermarkets, discounters, and shopping malls remained closed for both days. To accommodate demand, major chains such as Biedronka, Lidl, Aldi, and Dino announced extended operating hours on Friday, 14 August. Due to labor laws, the Prime Minister designated Friday, 14 August, as a compensatory day off for the civil service, impacting the availability of government offices like ZUS and NFZ. On 16 August, the trading ban remained in effect, with permitted shopping limited to locations such as gas stations, pharmacies, newsstands, and outlets in hotels, stations, or airports. Violating these regulations can result in fines ranging from 1,000 PLN to 100,000 PLN.
