E-scooter regulations tighten in Ireland and the UK
Authorities in the United Kingdom and Ireland are tightening restrictions on electric scooters following safety concerns and injuries.
In Ireland, a ban on e-scooter use for individuals under the age of 18 has come into effect. This decision follows reports from CHI Temple Street regarding a high volume of children requiring emergency treatment for traumatic brain injuries caused by e-scooter accidents. Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien noted that the government is monitoring compliance with the new rules, which also include increased fees for the detention and storage of seized vehicles.
In the United Kingdom, West Mercia Police have warned that parents and guardians could face investigation for ‘causing or permitting’ offences if their children are caught using illegal motorbikes, e-bikes, or e-scooters. The police are conducting enforcement activities to target vehicles being ridden unlawfully on public roads, pavements, and parks, noting that privately owned e-scooters are generally restricted to private land.
