E-scooter usage and safety trends in Germany

The e-scooter market in Germany is experiencing rapid growth, with the number of insured vehicles rising from approximately 764,000 three years ago to 1.66 million by the end of 2025. Most of this growth is driven by private ownership, which now accounts for over four out of five insured scooters.

Insurance statistics reveal a significant disparity in accident rates between private and rental fleets. Rental e-scooters show a liability damage frequency of 13 per 1,000 vehicles, more than double the rate of private scooters, which record six damages per 1,000 vehicles. Experts suggest this may be due to different usage behaviors, noting that private owners tend to wear helmets and avoid riding on sidewalks more frequently than rental users.

In product developments, the Navee N65i has been identified as a top performer in recent testing. The model features a 585 Wh battery providing a range of nearly 50 kilometers, integrated turn signals, and 10.5-inch tubeless tires. While it offers a stable ride on smooth asphalt, testers noted that the lack of suspension can make riding on cobblestones or gravel uncomfortable.
