E40 highway reopens after major bridge installation in Bertem

The E40 highway in Bertem has been reopened following the successful installation of a new steel arch bridge over the Tervuursesteenweg. The massive structure, measuring approximately 130 meters in length and 30 meters in height, weighs nearly 4,000 tons. To minimize traffic disruption, the bridge was constructed adjacent to the highway over several months before being moved into its final position using specialized transport vehicles.

More than 2,000 spectators gathered on Saturday evening to witness the operation. The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) organized the public viewing as a gesture to the local community following the inconveniences caused by the construction site.

While the highway is now open to traffic, further work is required to connect the Tervuursesteenweg to the new bridge and to finalize the carpool parking area. Full completion of the project is expected by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
