Bridge installation over E40 in Bertem

Overview

The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) scheduled the installation of a 4,000-ton steel arch bridge over the E40 highway in Bertem for the night of October 10 to October 11, 2026. The 30-meter-high structure was to be moved into place using Self Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs).

Following the operation, the E40 highway has reopened. The bridge, which is approximately 130 meters long, was constructed adjacent to the highway over several months to minimize disruption. More than 2,000 spectators attended a public viewing organized by the AWV. While the highway is open, additional work is required to connect the Tervuursesteenweg to the bridge and finalize a carpool parking area, with full project completion expected by late 2026 or early 2027.
