E65 Motorway to drive regional development in Central Greece

A study conducted by Serafim Polyzou, Professor Emeritus at the University of Thessaly, and civil engineer Eftymios Nakas highlights the significant developmental impact of the E65 Motorway in Central Greece. The project is identified as a critical infrastructure work that will contribute to regional development and the national economy.

The motorway aims to end the transport isolation of Western Thessaly, Western Macedonia, and Epirus by connecting the Athens-Thessaloniki axis with the Egnatia Odos. This connection is expected to reduce travel times and distances from Southern Greece to Western Macedonia and Epirus, facilitating the faster movement of goods and agricultural products. It also strengthens connections between commercial hubs such as the ports of Volos and Igoumenitsa.

Beyond logistics, the E65 is expected to act as a catalyst for tourism and social cohesion. Cities including Trikala, Karditsa, Ioannina, and Kalabaka (Meteora) will become more accessible, potentially increasing domestic and international tourist flows. The study suggests the project will support job creation, help retain local populations, and boost businesses in the hospitality and retail sectors. The regional units of Phthiotis, Grevena, Ioannina, and Western Thessaly are projected to benefit most due to high transport volumes.
