Early wheat harvest begins in Netherlands' Grain Republic region

Warm, dry weather has prompted Dutch wheat farmers in the Grain Republic (Graanrepubliek) of Groningen to start harvesting in mid‑July, two weeks earlier than the usual August start. Combines are already working in villages such as Finsterwolde, Nieuw‑Beerta and surrounding fields.

Agricultural cooperative Agrifirm reports that the early harvest has produced smaller grains and a 10‑15 % lower yield per hectare compared with the previous year, but the grain quality is high, with elevated protein levels and good moisture content. The reduced supply has helped push grain prices upward. Farmer Frank Kremer of Finsterwolde says the dry conditions have been ideal for ripening and that the crop’s quality is “excellent”.

Farmers expect the remaining fields to be harvested under similarly favorable weather in the coming weeks.
