Earth Night initiative targets light pollution through darkness

The international Earth Night initiative is calling for a reduction or total shutdown of artificial outdoor lighting to combat light pollution. Unlike the Earth Hour movement, Earth Night focuses specifically on the negative environmental impacts of excessive artificial light on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

Participants, including cities, businesses, and private households, are encouraged to dim or extinguish lights to restore natural darkness. Experts note that light pollution disrupts the circadian rhythms of animals, confuses migratory birds, harms insect populations, and can lead to sleep disturbances in humans.

In Germany, several cities are participating in the initiative. In Kassel, lighting for the Fridericianum and various churches will be turned off. Darmstadt will leave the Hochzeitsturm unlit, and Frankfurt plans to keep landmarks such as the Römer, Paulskirche, and the Eiserner Steg bridge dark. The goal is to demonstrate that darkness is a vital component of a healthy environment and to promote more purposeful use of artificial lighting.
