Global initiatives to combat light pollution

Efforts to mitigate the ecological and health impacts of artificial light at night (ALAN) are gaining momentum through artistic, scientific, and civic initiatives.

In Europe, the ALANart project received the 2026 Optimus Agora Prize from the Swiss National Science Foundation for using immersive art to communicate how artificial lighting disrupts ecosystems and contributes to insect decline. As part of a broader European initiative, Montpellier, France, is piloting the ‘Art of Darkness’ project to test lighting that preserves architectural heritage while respecting biodiversity.

Simultaneously, the international Earth Night initiative is encouraging cities, businesses, and households to dim or extinguish outdoor lights. This movement aims to combat light pollution, which experts state disrupts animal circadian rhythms, confuses migratory birds, and harms human sleep patterns. In Germany, cities such as Kassel, Darmstadt, and Frankfurt are participating by turning off lights on various landmarks and churches to demonstrate the environmental necessity of natural darkness.
