Earthquake in Indonesia's Sulawesi kills one, injures dozens

A magnitude‑6.7 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi on 16 June, shaking parts of central Sulawesi including the city of Palu. Local authorities reported at least one death and 38 injuries, of which 13 were serious, mainly in the heavily affected Sigi district.

The tremor damaged 67 houses, four public facilities, two bridges, two government office buildings and three commercial sites. A provincial road linking Palu with the neighbouring districts of Sigi and Poso was severed. Over 300 residents were evacuated and 312 people were displaced. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded at least 71 aftershocks, prompting further evacuations.

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency noted that four districts, home to about 1.3 million people, had not yet been fully assessed. The quake follows previous major seismic events on the island, including the 2018 7.5‑magnitude quake that killed more than 4,000 people.
