Earthquake near Chilca, Lima registers magnitude 3.4

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred near Chilca, in the Cañete province of the Lima region, on August 28, 2026, at 8:19:54 a.m. local time. According to the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP), the epicenter was located 11 kilometers south of Chilca at a depth of 48 kilometers.

The tremor had a reported intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli scale in Chilca, which is considered a weak movement that may be felt by some but typically does not cause significant damage. No reports of injuries or infrastructure damage have been issued.

This event follows other recent seismic activity in Peru, including a magnitude 3.4 tremor recorded near Vitor, Arequipa, on August 27. The IGP has advised the population and local governments to adopt prevention and evacuation measures in response to recent tremors in the northern and southern regions of the country.
