Seismic activity in Peru

Overview

Peru has experienced several seismic events throughout mid-to-late 2026. In June, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred with an epicenter approximately 86 km west of Callao at a depth of 55 km. The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) recorded an intensity of III in the Callao region during this event. In late August, further tremors were recorded, including a magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Vitor, Arequipa, on August 27, and a magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Chilca in the Lima region on August 28. The Chilca tremor, which had an epicenter 11 km south of the town at a depth of 48 km, was reported with an intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli scale. Activity continued into early September along the central coast. On August 30, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred 87 km southwest of Samanco in the Ancash region, and on September 1, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake was recorded in the sea 18 km southwest of Chilca. On September 5, two magnitude 3.8 earthquakes were recorded. The first occurred in the La Libertad region during the early morning, and the second occurred at 12:09 p.m. in the sea approximately 90 km west of Chimbote, Áncash, at a depth of 34 km. The Áncash tremor reached an intensity of II-III in Chimbote, though no casualties or material damage were reported. On September 7, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred near Jaén in the Cajamarca region at a depth of 14 km. The National Seismological Center (CENSIS) reported an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli scale. Seismologist César Jiménez Tintaya of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos has noted that the central coast holds significant accumulated seismic energy dating back to 1746.
