Granada earthquake strikes southern Spain, causing material damage FAST-MOVING
A powerful earthquake struck the Granada province in Andalusia, Spain, during the early hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026. The tremor, with an epicenter near Alhendín, was recorded at approximately 1:04 a.m. local time. While the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) initially estimated the magnitude at 4.8 or 5.0, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) calculated a magnitude of 5.2.
The earthquake caused various forms of material damage, including fallen cornices, cracks in walls, damaged roofs, and impacts on vehicles. In Las Gabias, authorities performed a preventative evacuation of a building. In Huétor Vega, some sectors experienced power outages. Despite the alarm and the hundreds of emergency calls received by the 112 service, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
Following the main event, a series of aftershocks occurred throughout the night. The Alhambra complex underwent inspections, which confirmed no significant structural damage to its historical monuments. The regional government of Andalusia has activated emergency protocols to manage the situation and monitor ongoing seismic activity.
