Seismic activity in southeastern Spain
Overview
In early August 2026, seismic activity was recorded in southeastern Spain. On 2 August, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred in the Murcia region near Librilla, felt in Alicante, Benidorm, and Albacete, with no reported injuries or damage.
On 13 August, activity increased in Andalucía. In Almería, a 3.7 magnitude tremor near Zurgena triggered 12 aftershocks. Simultaneously, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck near La Zubia in Granada, felt in approximately 67 municipalities and assigned a maximum intensity of III-IV on the European Macroseismic Scale by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
Seismic activity escalated significantly on 15 August. A major tremor, with magnitudes estimated between 5.0 and 5.2 by various agencies, occurred in the early hours near Alhendín and Otura. While the IGN recorded the magnitude at 4.8, subsequent revisions placed it at 5.0, and the USGS estimated it at 5.2. The shallow depth of the tremor, ranging between 2 and 10 kilometers, amplified its impact, and the quake was felt across much of Andalusia—including Málaga, Jaén, Córdoba, Almería, Sevilla, and Cádiz—as well as parts of Madrid and Murcia.
This major event caused material damage in the Granada metropolitan area, including Alhendín, Armilla, Las Gabias, and Churriana de la Vega. Reported damage includes falling masonry, cracked facades, and damage to roofs and vehicles. In Las Gabias, one building was preemptively evacuated, and some areas in Huétor Vega experienced intermittent power outages. In Armilla, residents evacuated to public parks and sports centers due to fear of aftershocks. While 112 Andalucía received numerous calls, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported. The Alhambra and Generalife complex underwent inspections and has since reopened to the public. The Junta de Andalucía has moved to an operational emergency phase of its Seismic Risk Plan.
