Earthquake strikes Turkey and Syria as seismic activity rises in Lebanon
A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and northern and eastern Syria on Thursday, centered north of Şanlıurfa. According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority and local officials, there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or significant destruction, though some partial building damage may have occurred.
In Lebanon, the National Center for Geophysics recorded a 2.9 magnitude tremor in the Nahle-Baalbek area at 01:12 on Friday. This seismic activity has renewed concerns regarding regional stability. Seismologist Frank Hoogeboom has warned that recent activity, including a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in eastern Turkey, suggests increasing seismic tension. He noted that the fault line extending south toward Lebanon and Palestine remains highly susceptible to a larger earthquake in the near future.
