Panama declares national emergency after powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake

A powerful earthquake, measuring up to 7.7 magnitude according to the USGS, struck Panama, triggering a national state of emergency. The seismic event, centered near Tonosí in the southwest, caused widespread damage across all ten provinces and two indigenous territories.

Authorities reported at least 27 injuries and approximately 300 evacuations. Significant infrastructure damage includes hundreds of homes, schools, bridges, and government buildings. In Panama City, a water treatment plant's capacity was reduced to 20% following the tremors.

The government of President José Raúl Mulino has announced an emergency fund of up to USD 100 million to address the crisis. While no fatalities have been confirmed, hundreds of people remain displaced, and some communities are isolated due to landslides and road damage.
