Chiapas coast hit by magnitude 5.5 earthquake and multiple aftershocks

A series of intense seismic events occurred off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, on the morning of September 2, 2026. The most significant tremor recorded a magnitude of 5.5 (or 5.6 according to USGS) with an epicenter located approximately 145 kilometers southwest of Huixtla at a depth of 10 kilometers.

This primary earthquake was followed by a sequence of at least four significant aftershocks within a two-hour window, with magnitudes ranging between 4.1 and 4.3. These movements were centered near Huixtla, Ciudad Hidalgo, and Mapastepec.

Authorities have reported no immediate injuries or material damage. The activity is attributed to the subduction of the Cocos Plate beneath the North American Plate. Some reports suggest these tremors may be related to the ongoing seismic activity following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred in the region on July 17, 2026.
