Chocó, Colombia experiences seismic swarm with multiple tremors

The Chocó department in western Colombia experienced a seismic swarm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, consisting of five tremors recorded in less than one hour between 15:12 and 16:05 local time. The tremors, which had magnitudes ranging from 3.3 to 4.7, were centered in the municipalities of Medio San Juan, Sipí, and Istmina.

The Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) attributed this activity to tectonic dynamics following a major magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck San José del Palmar on August 10, 2026, which resulted in 335 fatalities. While the recent swarm caused concern and was felt in cities such as Cali, no victims or significant material damage have been reported.

Subsequent seismic activity continued into the following days. On September 17, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred in Sipí, followed by a 3.3 magnitude tremor ten minutes later. On the morning of September 18, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded in Juradó.
