Indonesia experiences intense seismic activity across Sumatra and Flores

Indonesia is experiencing intense seismic activity, highlighted by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in northern Sumatra and a series of tremors in the Flores region. A major 7.7 magnitude earthquake previously struck the coast of Flores, resulting in at least 135 deaths and thousands of evacuations. Recent aftershocks, including a 5.1 magnitude quake near Ruteng, continue to be recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).

In response to the devastation in East Nusa Tenggara, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) has begun transitioning from emergency response to reconstruction. This includes demolishing severely damaged homes to make way for temporary and permanent housing prototypes.

Geological mapping efforts by BMKG and PusGen have identified numerous active fault lines across Java and East Java, including the Java Back-arc Thrust, which poses risks to major areas like Surabaya. Meanwhile, scientists at the University of California, Riverside, have developed a new method using GPS data to map locked fault segments, potentially improving the ability to identify locations prone to large ruptures.
