Earthquakes strike southern coast of Java, Indonesia

Two separate earthquakes have been recorded off the southern coast of Java, Indonesia, within a 24-hour period.

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Cilacap, Central Java, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 12:05 WIB. The epicenter was located in the sea, 59 kilometers south of Cilacap City. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) attributed the quake to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. BMKG categorized it as a medium earthquake with a normal fault mechanism and confirmed there is no potential for a tsunami.

Following this, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred south of Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 09:42 WIB. The epicenter was located in the sea, approximately 143 kilometers south of Bantul, at a depth of 14 kilometers. As of the latest reports, there have been no official accounts of structural damage or casualties resulting from this tremor.
