Overview

Indonesia has experienced a series of seismic events across several regions, including Cilacap, Pacitan, and Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). In early September 2026, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Cilacap, Central Java, with tremors felt as far as Yogyakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) attributed such activity to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate, noting that the Cilacap event posed no tsunami potential.

In East Java, Pacitan recorded multiple tremors, including a magnitude 4.5 earthquake on September 3. In NTT, authorities have been working to collect data on damaged schools following recent seismic activity, which previously resulted in casualties among students and teachers.

Additional tremors were recorded south of Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta, including a magnitude 3.5 earthquake on September 5. While multiple events have been recorded, there have been no immediate reports of significant structural damage or casualties from the most recent tremors in Java.
