Peru experiences multiple earthquakes in Arequipa and Ica regions
Multiple earthquakes have been recorded across Peru, primarily affecting the southern coastal regions of Arequipa and Ica. On Sunday morning, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Quilca in the Camaná province of Arequipa at 08:43 local time. This followed a magnitude 4.5 earthquake in the Nazca province of Ica at 06:36.
Authorities from the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) and the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional (COEN) reported that the tremors were perceived as light to moderate. No casualties or significant structural damages have been reported. Officials have ruled out any risk of a tsunami following the coastal movements.
Additional seismic activity was noted in other parts of the country, including a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in Cañete, Lima, during the early hours of Monday, October 12. The frequent activity in these regions is attributed to the interaction between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
