East Africa prepares for El Niño flooding and heavy rains

East African nations are bracing for significant weather disruptions as the El Niño phenomenon approaches. The World Meteorological Organization indicates a near 100 percent probability that the phenomenon will persist through February 2027.

In Kenya, authorities have warned that approximately 1.5 million people across all 47 counties could be affected by heavy rainfall and flooding. High-risk areas include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and the Tana River Delta. Specific concerns have been raised regarding urban flooding in Nairobi due to paved surfaces, as well as potential landslides and river flooding in regions like Budalangi and Bunyala. The government is urging residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate and prepare emergency plans.

In Tanzania, the Mwanga District in the Kilimanjaro region has issued specific warnings following reports from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority. Residents in valleys, near mountains, or close to rivers are advised to take precautions, such as relocating to safer ground, stockpiling essential supplies, and ensuring drainage systems are clear of debris to prevent flooding. Heavy rains are expected to impact the region from late September 2026 through January 2027.
