Kenya El Niño flood preparedness and risk
Overview
Kenya is preparing for significant flooding risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon. Humanitarian organization Caritas Kenya has begun intensifying anticipatory planning, which includes preparing sanitation facilities, water collection tanks, and digital systems for cash-based assistance. This effort follows previous severe weather, including March 2026 flash floods in Nairobi that resulted in more than 50 deaths.
Complementing these humanitarian efforts, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued formal warnings, forecasting an 81 per cent probability of intense rainfall beginning in October, with a 97 per cent chance of effects continuing into early 2027. The National Disaster Operations Centre has identified 18 high-risk counties across the Coast, Lake Basin, Rift Valley, and North Eastern regions. Potential hazards include landslides, coastal erosion, disease outbreaks, and displacement, alongside economic risks to agriculture, hydropower, and telecommunications infrastructure.
