East African nations accelerate infrastructure preparations for AFCON 2027

Tanzania and Kenya are intensifying infrastructure and facility preparations ahead of co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In Tanzania, the government has launched an 8.7 billion TZS project to upgrade the Moshi–Arusha main road. This route is critical as it connects Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha and Moshi, serving as a primary gateway for international visitors. Deputy Minister for Works Godfrey Kasekenya has urged contractors to accelerate the timeline, suggesting a completion date in March 2027 to ensure the country appears fully prepared before the tournament begins on June 19, 2027.

In Kenya, officials are conducting inspections of the 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium, also known as the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium. While the facility is reported to be 94 per cent complete, recent reviews by government officials have focused on meeting Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Key concerns include technical finishing works, operational readiness, and ensuring the stadium is fully accessible to persons with disabilities and meets occupational safety requirements.
