CAF completes infrastructure inspections for AFCON 2027

Overview

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has completed an eight-day inspection tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to evaluate infrastructure readiness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, marks the first time three East African nations will co-host the event.

A multidisciplinary delegation of experts in security, transport, logistics, marketing, and media assessed various venues to ensure they meet international standards. In Kenya, the delegation inspected the 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium (also known as the Raila Odinga International Stadium) and Kasarani Stadium. While Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, noted that Talanta Stadium is approximately 95% complete based on initial designs, CAF issued a hosting readiness rating of 80%. At Kasarani Stadium, contractors are working to address new requirements, with completion expected by December.

The tour also included inspections of major facilities in the other host nations, specifically the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, and the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This collaborative effort builds upon the foundation laid when the three nations co-organized the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

As preparations continue, the group stage qualifiers for AFCON 2027 are set to begin on September 24, 2026. The qualifying phase will involve 48 teams divided into 12 groups, though Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have already secured their positions as co-hosts.
