East African nations seek to diversify tourism sectors

Uganda and Kenya are implementing strategies to expand their tourism industries by targeting new markets and diversifying their service offerings.

In Poland, Uganda participated as the official partner country at the 10th ALLinTOO international tourism workshop in Warsaw. A Ugandan delegation, led by Jessica Namuddu and Jennifer Asiimwe, engaged with Polish and Central European tour operators to promote wildlife, cultural heritage, and safari experiences. The initiative aims to secure investment in tourism infrastructure and lodge development, with several Ugandan destination management companies participating in business-to-business meetings to establish commercial partnerships.

In Kenya, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano is advocating for increased investment in cultural and community-based tourism. Speaking at the 33rd Maralal International Camel Derby in Samburu County, Miano emphasized the need to move beyond traditional wildlife safaris by leveraging the country's festivals, landscapes, and traditions. She noted that developing the northern tourism circuit through events like the camel derby can provide direct economic benefits to local artisans, traders, and hospitality enterprises.
