East African water infrastructure projects launched in Uganda and Kenya

Water infrastructure projects are being launched in East Africa to combat long-standing scarcity. In Uganda’s Rukungiri district, a new borehole has been commissioned in Rwembogo cell, Nyakagyeme Sub County. The project was funded by the Nile Humanitarian Development Agency following lobbying efforts by Member of Parliament Jim Katugugu Muhwezi. Local residents noted that the new source is expected to reduce waterborne diseases and ease the burden on women and children who previously traveled long distances for water.

In Kenya, President William Ruto announced that the expansion of the Mzima Springs water project in Taita-Taveta County will begin this year. The government intends to mobilize Sh30 billion through the National Infrastructure Fund to address perennial shortages in Mwatate, Voi, and Taveta constituencies, as well as Mombasa City. The expansion aims to update the original project completed in 1984.
