East African water infrastructure development

Overview

Efforts to expand water infrastructure and access are progressing across East Africa. In Uganda, initiatives include the commissioning of a new borehole in the Rukungiri district and the launch of 20 deep borehole projects in the Kiryandongo District, valued at Shs652 million, to combat waterborne diseases and build resilience against dry spells.

In Kenya, the government has announced plans to expand the Mzima Springs water project in Taita-Taveta County, aiming to mobilize Sh30 billion to address shortages in Mombasa and surrounding constituencies. Meanwhile, Rwanda has reported an increase in daily water treatment capacity to 367,176 cubic metres following significant pipeline construction and the expansion of WASAC Group branches, as part of a national goal to achieve universal clean water access by 2029.
