Indonesia faces widespread forest and land fires
Indonesia is facing widespread forest and land fires (karhutla) across several provinces, leading to significant environmental and health concerns. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports that South Sumatra has been hit hardest, with over 531 hectares burned and 24 hotspots identified. Other heavily affected regions include Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and various provinces in Sumatra.
In East Java, at least 14 mountain areas, including Mount Semeru and Mount Bromo, have been impacted by fires. In South Kalimantan, authorities are struggling with underground fires in peatlands that remain undetected by the naked eye but are visible via thermal imaging. Meanwhile, the South Kalimantan Police are investigating potential corporate involvement in fires across 10 different land holdings.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) has issued warnings regarding deteriorating air quality. In provinces such as Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, and parts of Kalimantan, air quality has reached unhealthy, very unhealthy, or even hazardous levels. Residents in these areas are advised to limit outdoor activities to avoid respiratory issues caused by the accumulating haze.
