Indonesian Police Uncover Multiple Fraud and Illegal Trade Cases

Indonesian authorities have dismantled several criminal operations involving food fraud, commodity embezzlement, and cybercrime.

In East Java, police have identified 11 suspects in a case involving the embezzlement of 185 tons of sugar, valued at approximately Rp3 billion. The sugar, which was being transported from three sugar mills in Jember, Lumajang, and Kediri, was allegedly diverted to illegal storage sites in Sidoarjo and Bogor. PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara (PT SGN) stated that while the theft does not cause direct financial loss to the company as the goods already belonged to buyers, they are committed to tightening distribution oversight.

In North Sumatra, the National Food Agency and police uncovered a consumer protection violation involving fortified rice produced by PT UDS in Deli Serdang. Laboratory tests revealed that four brands, including Penari Bangkok and Golden 111, contained nutritional levels that did not match their packaging labels. Authorities seized over 15 tons of the rice, estimated to be worth Rp280 million.

Additionally, the East Java Regional Police arrested a man in Sidoarjo for operating an illegal business selling WhatsApp and Telegram accounts. The suspect allegedly used stolen identity data to register SIM cards and sell accounts to facilitate online gambling promotions linked to networks in Cambodia. Total transaction volumes associated with these activities are estimated to reach Rp1 billion.
