East Nusa Tenggara earthquake leaves 111 dead and triggers thousands of aftershocks

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has resulted in at least 111 deaths, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The highest fatality rates were recorded in Manggarai District (45), East Manggarai (38), and Nagekeo (13). The BNPB reported that 8,794 aftershocks have been recorded since the main event on August 15, 2026, with magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 6.2. Experts predict seismic activity may continue for several more weeks.

In response to the disaster, the Ministry of Transportation is accelerating repairs to damaged transportation facilities, including terminals, airports, and ports, to restore connectivity and logistics distribution. While the damage to these facilities is not considered severe, officials are addressing cracks and debris to ensure public mobility and the delivery of aid.

As of the latest reports, the number of evacuees is beginning to decline, with 712 residents in Sikka District returning home. However, the total number of evacuees in the region remains high at 175,909. Authorities are encouraging those still hesitant to return to their homes to utilize centralized shelters where clean water, sanitation, and health services are available.
