Eastern Mediterranean groups demand ban on plastic waste imports
A coalition of 82 organizations, including environmental platforms, professional associations, and NGOs, has issued a joint call to the Turkish government to ban the import of plastic waste.
The groups argue that while much of the waste is brought into the country under the guise of recycling, the processes of sorting, storing, and processing create significant environmental risks. They highlight that non-recyclable materials and pollutants released during these stages threaten soil, water, marine ecosystems, and human health through the spread of microplastics and nanoplastics.
The coalition specifically expressed concern for the Eastern Mediterranean region, noting that areas such as Mersin, Adana, and Hatay are already under heavy pressure from industry, ports, petrochemicals, and urbanization. They stated that these coastal and agricultural areas cannot sustain the additional ecological burden of imported plastic waste. The groups have called upon the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to implement a ban rather than relying solely on increased inspections.
