Overview

Global research continues to track the expansion of microplastic contamination. While previous studies highlighted deep-sea and North Sea pollution, new findings from the University of Plymouth and North Carolina State University identify abandoned offshore oil and gas pipelines as significant contributors, potentially generating between 4.5 and 509 tons of microplastics annually due to their plastic protective coatings. Additionally, studies in Poland found that recycled products, such as toys, contain hazardous brominated flame retardants, raising concerns that restricted toxins are being reintroduced into the market through recycling processes.

In the Mediterranean, pollution remains driven by land-based activities and river runoff. The Mediterranean Environment Platform has launched ‘Project Blue,’ a three-year initiative involving household waste separation and beach cleanups. The platform is also preparing a legal complaint for the United Nations and the European Commission, alleging that waste brokers, certain foreign brands, and European institutions are violating environmental laws by exporting waste to Turkey.

Political pressure in Turkey persists, with YENİ Party Istanbul Deputy Ali Gökçek reiterating that “Turkey is not Europe’s garbage dump” in a parliamentary inquiry to the Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. Gökçek warned that pollution in Antalya, Alanya, and Mersin threatens fishing and tourism. In response, a workshop in Marmaris, coordinated by the Sıfır Atık Foundation, focused on developing a circular economy roadmap to mitigate waste pressure on coastal areas.
