Eberswalde and Wolkersdorf school bike contests boost sustainable mobility

In Eberswalde, Germany, the city took part in the international "Stadtradeln" competition from 10 to 30 May. A total of 1,343 cyclists in 59 teams rode 186,339 km, avoiding roughly 30.5 tonnes of CO₂. Over the event’s ten‑year history the town has logged about 1.4 million km, equivalent to an estimated 222 tonnes of greenhouse‑gas savings. Schools contributed heavily, with eleven institutions and 990 participants covering 112,600 km.

In Wolkersdorf, Austria, the annual BIKEline school cycling challenge highlighted the AHS Wolkersdorf as the most active school, logging 2,093 rides among 41 participating schools nationwide. Top individual performances included Marlene Perschl’s 595.7 km and Simon Weinberger’s 6,080 m of climbing. Winners received vouchers, season tickets and bike‑service prizes. The competition, organized with local schools and the Radlobby, aims to encourage students to bike to school and support climate‑friendly transport.

Both events underline local efforts to promote active, low‑carbon mobility through community‑wide cycling challenges.
