Ebola co-discoverer predicts DRC outbreak end in months
Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, one of the co-discoverers of the Ebola virus, suggests that the current seventeenth epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could potentially subside within three to four months.
Reflecting on the original 1976 outbreak in Yambuku, Muyembe described the intense challenges faced during the initial investigation of the mysterious disease, which was characterized by severe fever and hemorrhaging. He recalled the high risk of infection during early diagnostic efforts and the panic that ensued within medical facilities.
The virus was eventually isolated in Belgium by microbiologist Peter Piot after blood samples were sent from the DRC. Muyembe noted that in the early days, the breaking of transmission chains relied heavily on community precautions and the implementation of barriers between villages, as no vaccines or specific medications were available at the time.
