Ebola epidemic in Democratic Republic of the Congo nears 8,000 cases

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is expanding, with confirmed cases approaching 8,000. Recent data indicates approximately 7,946 infections and 3,833 deaths, resulting in a cumulative lethality rate of about 48.2%.

Ituri province remains the epicenter, accounting for over 76% of all confirmed cases. Other affected provinces include North Kivu, South Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Sud-Ubangi. Health authorities have warned that hospitalization centers in Ituri are reaching saturation levels.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, was declared on May 15. This represents the 17th Ebola outbreak in the country since the virus was first identified in 1976. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that armed conflict, insecurity, and population displacement are severely hindering efforts to track contacts and access affected areas. While the risk remains very high for the DRC and high for neighboring countries, the WHO has not recommended travel or trade restrictions at this time.
