Ebola epidemic spreads in DR Congo and Uganda

The Ebola virus epidemic, specifically the Bundibugyo virus, continues to spread across Central Africa, affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. One hundred days after the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern, the outbreak has resulted in over 2,600 deaths and more than 550,000 cases.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stated that the epidemic is far from being under control and remains an international risk. Martina Marchiò, medical coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), reports that the situation on the front lines is extremely difficult due to the intersection of the epidemic with ongoing conflict, continuous population displacement, and fragile healthcare systems.

Key challenges in containing the virus include difficult terrain, insecurity, and high population mobility, which complicate case identification and contact tracing. Furthermore, the response is weakened by shortages in essential resources such as personnel, water, energy, laboratories, and protective equipment. Many patients are reportedly arriving at medical centers too late or dying before they can reach care.
