DR Congo Ebola outbreak expands to 63 health zones
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has expanded to 63 health zones across seven provinces. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the virus has spread to two new areas: Bulu in Sud-Ubangi province and Dungu in Haut-Uele province, near the borders of the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
As of September 23, the outbreak has resulted in 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of approximately 48%. While infection rates have declined in provinces like Ituri and Haut-Uele, North Kivu has seen a 73% surge in confirmed cases over a recent three-week period.
Health officials from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) noted that the rapid spread was exacerbated by delayed detection, as existing diagnostic kits were initially unable to identify the Bundibugyo strain. Operational challenges, including regional insecurity, population displacement, and community mistrust, continue to hinder contact tracing and medical access. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments for this particular strain, though the WHO is accelerating clinical trials.
