DR Congo Ebola outbreak hits record levels, WHO warns
The World Health Organization says the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is the largest the country has ever faced, with 3,605 laboratory‑confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths – a fatality rate of about 44 %. The outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo variant, for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists, although vaccine trials are under way in the United Kingdom and Singapore.
In the most recent week the outbreak recorded 567 new infections and 296 deaths, the highest weekly totals since the epidemic began. Contact tracing currently reaches roughly 80 % of exposed individuals, but experts say it must rise to 95 % to curb transmission. Health workers continue to operate in a difficult security environment because of armed conflict, large‑scale displacement and deep community mistrust.
The virus has spread from its origin in Ituri province to five provinces – Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uélé and Tshopo – and cross‑border movement raises the risk of spread to neighboring countries. Uganda has declared itself free of Ebola but remains on alert as cases continue in DR Congo. WHO declared an international public‑health emergency on 17 May and called for intensified response measures.
