Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeds 8,000 cases

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached critical levels, with over 8,000 confirmed cases and 3,901 deaths reported as of late September. The mortality rate has exceeded 48 percent, reflecting significant challenges in early detection and medical intervention.

The current crisis is driven by the Bundibugyo variant, which complicates response efforts because the conventional Ervebo vaccine used for the Zaire variant is not standardly effective against it. This necessitates strict research protocols for vaccine administration, limiting its widespread use.

Several factors are hindering containment efforts, including armed violence in regions such as Haut-Uélé and Ituri, which restricts access to communities and the transport of biological samples. Additionally, public mistrust of health teams and a shortage of medical personnel have slowed case reporting and patient isolation. Currently, only 83.4 percent of identified contacts receive daily follow-up, falling short of the 95 percent target required for effective control.
