DR Congo Ebola outbreak surpasses 9,000 cases

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has surpassed 9,000 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths. The current epidemic, which began in May, has spread across 65 health zones in seven provinces, including Ituri and North Kivu. The case fatality rate is reported at approximately 48.3%.

Containment efforts are facing significant challenges due to ongoing conflict between government forces and rebel groups, community mistrust of medical personnel, and shortages of medical supplies. Officials note that confirmed cases may only represent about one-third of the actual total due to undetected infections.

Regional concerns have increased following the report of an imported case in Kenya, where a national traveling from the DRC through Uganda died in Nairobi. In response to the crisis, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) is preparing the Tumaini Phase 2/3 clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vaccine candidates against the Bundibugyo virus.
