The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a severe Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which is spreading at an unprecedented rate. As of mid-August 2026, the epidemic has recorded over 4,400 confirmed cases and more than 2,000 deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that at its current pace, the crisis could eclipse the deadly 2014-2016 West African outbreak.

Genetic sequencing indicates the virus likely began circulating in February, months before the official declaration on May 15. The outbreak has expanded from three health zones to 54, affecting at least six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. Challenges to containment include regional instability, weak health infrastructure, and community distrust.

The WHO aims to reverse the upward trend within three months by implementing comprehensive response measures, including increasing contact tracing from 80 percent to 95 percent and tripling treatment capacity to 3,000 beds within 12 weeks. Because there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments for the Bundibugyo strain, researchers are preparing human clinical trials for new vaccine candidates.
