Ebola outbreak in Congo kills over 2,000 people
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak, with health authorities reporting 2,011 deaths and 4,381 confirmed cases. The current crisis is spreading at an unprecedented rate; while it took nine weeks to reach the first 1,000 deaths, the figure doubled in just three weeks.
The outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which currently lacks approved vaccines or specific treatments. This has resulted in a case fatality rate of 45.9 percent, significantly higher than the 39.6 percent recorded during the 2014-2016 West African outbreak.
Response efforts in the eastern provinces, particularly Ituri, are being severely hindered by ongoing rebel conflicts, poor infrastructure, and communication challenges. Additionally, health workers have initiated strikes due to delayed wage payments. In response to the crisis, WHO experts have recommended large-scale clinical trials to determine if existing vaccines, such as Ervebo, can provide cross-protection against this specific strain.
