DR Congo Ebola outbreak surpasses 7,000 cases and 3,300 deaths
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its most severe Ebola epidemic in history, with confirmed cases surpassing 7,000. According to recent government data, the outbreak has resulted in 3,398 deaths, representing a mortality rate of approximately 48.4 percent. To date, 1,671 patients have recovered.
The epidemic, which was officially declared in mid-May, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain. It has spread across seven provinces, including the northeastern epicenter of Ituri and the newly affected South-Ubangi province. The virus has also been detected in educational centers in Ituri, causing significant concern among parents and local officials.
Health organizations, including the World Health Organization, have noted that the response is under pressure due to insufficient funding and a shortage of qualified personnel. The WHO estimates that an additional 5,000 health workers are required to manage the crisis. While some hotspots in Ituri show signs of slowing, the geographic expansion of the virus remains a critical challenge.
