Ebola outbreak in DRC triggers WHO call for humanitarian truce
The Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has escalated into a major international health emergency, with over 5,500 confirmed cases and more than 2,600 deaths reported as of late August 2026. The epidemic is spreading across six provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a six-month humanitarian truce to allow medical teams to safely access affected communities. Health workers face significant obstacles, including persistent insecurity and armed conflict involving groups such as the M23 rebel movement. In the last six months, more than 260 attacks against health workers have been recorded, resulting in several deaths.
While the WHO announced that the Ebola outbreak in neighboring Uganda has officially ended, the situation in the DRC remains critical. The Bundibugyo strain currently lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment. Experts warn that the epidemic poses an immediate risk to bordering countries, particularly the Central African Republic and South Sudan, due to high population mobility and ongoing regional conflicts.
