Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreads exponentially as UN warns of funding shortages

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading at an exponential rate, prompting the United Nations to call for immediate international funding. Since the outbreak was reported on May 15, there have been 5,290 recorded cases and 2,516 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 47.6%.

Julien Harneis, the UN senior coordinator for the Ebola response, warned from Bunia in the Ituri province that the virus is spreading faster than containment efforts. He noted that 2,500 people died in the last three months, with half of those deaths occurring in the last 20 days. The affected area is now larger than the size of France.

Currently, 1,152 patients have recovered, while approximately 840 remain in isolation or medical centers. Harneis cautioned that existing funds will only last for a few weeks, warning that delays in financing will make the epidemic more lethal and difficult to control. The response is being hampered by regional violence and weakened health infrastructure in provinces including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Haut-Uélé.
