The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has expanded to a seventh province, Sud-Ubangi. This development marks the first confirmed case in the country's northwest, a region that does not share borders with the six previously affected provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé.

As of September 11, 2026, official data indicates the epidemic has surpassed 7,000 confirmed cases and 3,398 deaths, maintaining a high fatality rate of approximately 48%. The Ituri province remains the primary epicenter, accounting for over 5,400 cases. The World Health Organization has classified the risk of the epidemic as very high, noting that the outbreak is on track to become one of the most significant in the nation's history.

Containment efforts are being hampered by severe shortages of trained personnel, funding, and medical beds. While the government has initiated vaccination of frontline health workers using the Ervebo vaccine and launched a revised 180-day response plan, logistical challenges remain. Insecurity, population displacement, and limited access to remote areas further complicate contact tracing and the interruption of transmission chains.
